Behavioral Problems in Children

Behavior problems come in all different sizes for parents with their children, and in many cases the behaviors seem to defy adult logic. All one has to do is a simple web-search of Behavioral Problems to see how many any one search engine can find.

A Baby For All Seasons

Children being viewed as a commodity, that can be bought to fit the parents needs; it is expressedly voiced, by so-called superstar Ricky Martin. Wanting a child from each continent reads to me like words from a collector not from a parent to be.

Mary's Moral Decision: Lost Role Model Behavior?

Given the holiday season and mother-child theme that is celebrated by so many religious Christians this time of year, it seems appropriate for an adoptee to ask the question: what other option would Mary have had for herself and her child, given her pregnancy and unmarried status when she learned she could take Joseph as her legal husband and move far away to give birth to her baby, fathered by another? [The Christmas Story from the book of Matthew can be found here: http://holydays.tripod.com/chris

Adoptive Parent Evaluations

Does anybody know exactly the specifics of an adoptive parent evaluation are?

I think I read somewhere else (in one particular state) that it consists of 100 questions and a psychological examination.
I'd like to see those questions - they obviously aren't adequate!

I would love to see these get tightened up.

The Cost of Cultural Sensitivity -- who keeps losing?

Pregnancy v. Placement: a parent's perspective

One of the world's most famous adoptive mothers made a comment I'd like to quote:

“Like most women, I love being pregnant.” She added that pregnancy makes “you feel like more like a woman than you've ever felt. You just feel like everything about your body is there for your baby.” Angelina Jolie

How would you respond to the following information?

Your Life. Your Baby. Your Choice.

Facing an unplanned pregnancy can be very difficult and scary, and deciding what to do will be even harder.

While you may feel totally alone at this time, know that you aren't! According to the March of Dimes, nearly 60 percent of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned.

That is to say, millions of women have been in your shoes.

Keeping perspective at this time is critical. The most important thing to remember is that you have a choice. Every woman does.

Trends in Teens: Any RADical Discoveries Made Yet?

A suicide attempt is often seen as the very depressed person's version of "seeking closure" to a very hopeless and helpless desperate situation. It's the permanant answer to a temporary condition that needs to be recognized sooner (than later) by friends, adults and intimate partners so appropraite assitance can be given to the life that does not have to be lost.

Letter from Representative Jeb Bradley

Today the grape-vines again whispered and brought to me a letter by Representatvive Jeb Bradley, concerning Romania's earlier decision to close it's borders for international adoption. For those unfamiliar with the situation: At the time Romania decided to institute a moratorium on international adoption after years of what can be seen as an exodus of Romanian children. Upon instituting the moratorium there were several children already assigned to prospective adopters, but whose adoption was not finalized. These became known as so-called pipeline cases.

Moving History

I'm curious... are there museums or exhibits that feature the history of Child Placement anywhere?

Is adoption, with the preserved facts as they really were and are, included in any of this?

I would think there are lots of children of adoptees who would like to know more about their parents from broken heritages.

25 cents and a canary

When reading the article The paradoxical rationalization of modern adoption, I noticed the deeply sad yet at the same time funny account of a baby being sold for 25 cents and a canary. It is taken from Preventive Treatment of Neglected Children (links to a 18.5 MB PDF file), the final book of a four volumes prepared for the Eighth International Prison Congress of 1910.

Everything has it's place, even the mob in "human waste control"

It always has amused me how people don't make simple connections when it comes to Child Placement, Safe Haven Laws and little things like dumpsters, dark alleys, abortion clinics, churches, health-care clinics, housing developments and the like.

Old-World Thinking isn't just for the movies.

Child trafficking is real. It's out there, and it's marketed in ways that's cleverly disguised, and quite frankly, it's disgusting.

A Mother's Sacrifice

The following article was sent to me, but I have to preface it with a story of my own. When I first discovered a lump in my breast, I had two small children. Other than not knowing anything about my medical history, and having complete trust in my beloved Ob/Gyn who respected my adopted status, my biggest concerns revolved around my babies: IF it's the worst-case scenario, do I wear a wig, or scarf, and do I let them see me cry?

I didn't have much time, since the surgery took place within the week of discovery.

Family Preservation, Foster-care and Adoption

Last couple of days I've reading up on family preservation programmes and though a necessary instrument in Child Welfare Services it does very little to prevent the many unnecessary adoptions taking place. Family preservation as it is now organized is part of the programs Child Protective Services can use in case a child is assumed to be in danger within it's natural family. Children who would otherwise end up in the foster-care system, due to family preservation programmes have a bigger chance staying at home.
