Infant/Child Response to Grief

When a child is placed in foster care or an adoptive home, care and concern must be given to the grief and loss that infant or child is experiencing. It is my belief too many adoptees and foster kids are being sent to psychologists because parents do not understand the grief process of children. Remember, the new child in your life now has lost the only parents he/she has only ever known. Imagine what that must be like.

Signs of a Grieving Child

What God says about your money

Once you've figured out what Christianity, Judaism or Islam preach about making and spending money, teach your kids early and often.

Published March 14, 2008

Faiths usually offer parents very clear direction on child-rearing. Premarital sex, for instance? That's pretty much a no-no, no matter what deity you worship. Dietary rules can also be pretty straightforward -- no pork for Muslims and Jews, no beef for Hindus.

Parenting

Unmarried fathers

Heritage's FamilyFacts.org draws our attention to its latest featured finding, from the American Sociological Review. The finding concludes that out-of-wedlock fatherhood is problematic for men just as out-of-wedlock motherhood is problematic for women:

Stress in pregnancy hits offspring's emotional brain

Stress experienced by a pregnant female can alter the structure of her offspring's brain, particularly regions vital for emotional development, scientists have discovered. Furthermore, in rodents at least, the effects differ in male and female offspring. That might help explain the different susceptibilities of men and women to emotional and psychiatric disorders, says Katharina Braun, from the University of Magdeburg,Germany. Braun presented the work at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies' annual meeting in Vienna, Austria, on Tuesday. Braun and colleagues at the University of Jerusalem in Israel studied the effects of stress on pregnant rats. If they become stressed in last trimester of pregnancy, their offspring developed fewer nerve connections in two brain regions that control emotions - the cingulate cortex and orbitofrontal cortex. In addition, the nerve cells in several other regions show different branching patterns to normal, with different effects on males and females. In the hippocampus, an important region that controls memory and emotion, males show an increase in branching while females show a decrease. In the prefrontal cortex, the males develop shorter nerve branches, while the females do not. Braun has not yet tested the behavioural effects of these changes on adult rats, but the results could reveal a possible mechanism for the development of emotional disorders seen in humans.

Ok, so why were there kids as the backdrop setting for Bush's remarks following his veto of the stem cell research bill?

Because these kids are not merely cute props, they are emblematic of, and the end product of one particular corner of the so-called 'culture of life' that Bush and his allies are attempting to remake America into.

1 in 3 U.S. parents lacks knowledge about babies

Many have little understanding of infant development, study finds

Reuters
updated 3:13 p.m. ET, Sun., May. 4, 2008

CHICAGO - Nearly a third of U.S. parents know surprisingly little about typical infant development, and this lack of understanding can rob their babies of much-needed mental stimulation, researchers said on Sunday.

"There are numerous parenting books telling people what to expect when they're pregnant," said Dr. Heather Paradis of the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York.

Tiny Tyrants: How to Really Change Your Kid's Behavior

By Alan E. Kazdin
Posted Thursday, April 10, 2008, at 2:20 PM ET

Picture an explosive parent who responds to a child's misbehavior by ranting, screaming, and perhaps hitting. Now picture a calm, patient, gentle parent who responds to the same misbehavior—no matter how provokingly awful—by reasoning and explaining. The rage-ball goes ballistic; the patient explainer works hard to see what's going on inside the child in order to get the child to understand why the behavior must change.

The Globalization of Baby-Making

By Ellen Goodman

By now we all have a story about a job outsourced beyond our reach in the global economy. My favorite is about the California publisher who hired two reporters in India to cover the Pasadena city government. Really.

There are times as well when the offshoring of jobs takes on a quite literal meaning. When the labor we are talking about is, well, labor.

How adopting an angelic five-year-old blew our family apart

By MELANIE ALLEN

When Melanie Allen and her husband Rob, a quantity surveyor, adopted a five-year-old called Alex, they couldn't believe their good fortune. But as the months passed, Melanie and Rob, both now 44, began to see a very different side of their 'perfect' daughter - and found themselves sucked into a nightmare in which they faced losing everything ...

Jumping out of the car, I could just make out the small, lone figure waiting at the front door.
