Angels for Animals is involved in special programs with several prisons in the tri-county area. Some of the dogs at Angels' are difficult to adopt because of behavioral problems such as, lack of basic obedience, not being housebroken, and/or separation anxiety, etc.
Selected prisoners, with the guidance of our Trainer and Behavior Specialist Rae Reinhart improve the behavior and obedience of the dogs in the program. Dogs are selected from the shelter by the severity of their problems and space limits at the prison. Not all dogs need the prison training program. This program is not a punishment for the dogs. Instead, this training improves the dog's chances for adoption at the shelter.
The training typically runs from 6 to 8 weeks. Most dogs return crate trained, housebroken (for the most part), and understand basic commands such as sit, come, heel, stay and down. Most walk nicely on a leash. This program has been an asset to our adoption success as well as a collaborative effort with the selected prisons.
