Sugar Creek Development Unit (SCDU) is a sixty bed residential program that provides services for the mentally retarded, ill, and organically brain damaged individuals. Inmates are offered a full range of behavioral and psychiatric and psycho-social interventions. Inmates may leave this unit if they are seen to have adapted well, or inmates may complete the remainder of the sentences within this unit.
Residential Treatment Unit (RTU) is a special unit designed to provide support and treatment to inmates who have difficulties living in general population due to psychological or psychiatric problems. Inmates within the RTU receive treatment and programming to reduce distress and improve their ability to function. Inmates are received from Madison, London, and Dayton Correctional Institutions for treatment and are placed on the RTU until it is determined their behavior and ability to maintain self-control have reached an acceptable level. At such time, the inmates are returned to their parent institution.
Angels for Animals is an organization devoted to the care of abandoned animals in Allen County. The organization has contacted the Allen Correctional Institution for inmate assistance in caring for kittens that have been abandoned by their mothers. Four inmates will be selected as Animal Handlers and will bottle-feed, litter train and care for the kittens 24-hours a day until homes can be found for them. To date, 40 kittens have been brought to the institution.
