It seems there are two styles of adoption-lobbying taking place these days. Sound bytes and small quotes made by those touched by the Hollywood acting/NYC fashion bug are now extending themselves by touching and re-touching the adoption-card.
This past weekend I spotted two different sides to the same plea given for the adoption industry.
The following is a blurb that shows pop-singer Pink giving voice to a popular "I don't want to create my own, I'd rather recycle some" opinion:
Pop star PINK would rather adopt a child than give birth - because there are too many people in the world already. The singer, real name Alecia Moore, and first-husband Carey Hart split in February (08). The Trouble hitmaker insists she hasn't given up hope of having a family but would rather "rescue" a child through adoption than have one of her own. She tells U.S. tabloid Star: "I don't know if I need to have my own (children). I rescue dogs, so I would probably rescue kids. I feel like with global warming and all, why produce more? Foster parent. Adoption." [From: HipHossip, "Female Rocker Pink Considers Adoption", Sept 6,2008, http://www.hiphossip.com/2008/09/female-rocker-pink-considers-adoption.html]
While NOT having children, to keep the world green is one thing...(hey, no adding additional diapers to already overloaded landfills is a huge help to the environment, isn't it?)... buying into the idea that everything is rosy in the world of adoption is just unrealistic, and not at all a good public message to keep sending out. But personal adoption issues aside, below is a model's perspective on the orphanage problem found in places like India.
Leah Martin is in Ahmedabad, following her heart — to make a difference to millions of orphaned children in the state and country.
Martin is using her musical prowess to make a point on adoption. Martin said, “There are around 12.4 million orphans in India. Last year less than 3,500 got a home. The best way to help orphans is to adopt them and I want to create more awareness about adoption in the country.”
Recently, Martin produced a music album 'Hope' in support of her cause, She said, “I see music as a medium to inspire people towards adoption. We are also hoping to rope in top Indian celebrities for creating music videos for these orphaned children. It is not for any commercial purpose but for love of these children.” She also hopes to be a yoga guru. I'm curious, if celebrities were educated about the dark side of adoption, child placement, and how those working for orphanages use children to promote their own self-interests, would adoption be as vogue as it has become these days?
Not for nuthin, but... I'd much rather see an end to adoption promotion and start seeing more celebrities and people from wealth and opportunity start pushing the idea that safe child placement, in every country, needs to be the public's focus and priority.
How about: "Less time selling children, and more time protecting them" ?!?
