When this movie came out, I was told by a dozen people I reminded them of Margot Tenenbaum. I was in my adoption fog at the time, and it didn't even register about the adoption factor!

Anyway, this actually brought a smile to my grinch face...

It could be worse...

I was told I was a Debbie Downer (without the laughs) when it comes to child placement/adoption-related conversations.

The skit featured in the youtube video shows Debbie having breakfast with her family at Disney.  As everyone else shows their excitement about the thrills of Disney, Debbie infiltrates the conversations with statements like the following:

  • "Ever since they found mad cow disease in the U.S., I'm not taking any chances. It can live in your body for years before it ravages your brain."
  • "I guess Roy (from Siegfried and Roy) isn't doing as well as they first thought... He was attacked by his own tiger and suffered devastating injuries."
  • "Did you guys hear about that train explosion in North Korea? ... The media is so sensitive there; so secretive. We may never know how many people perished."
  • "Wow, you guys, Disney World really is fun. It makes me feel like a kid again. I mean, the time before my two-year stint at children's hospital."
  • "Oh, hey Pluto. Hi. Boy, it must be fun to work here... although, the biggest drawback to working at a theme park is that you must live under constant fear of deathly terrorist attacks."
  • "With that costume on, He (Pluto) was probably in the early stages of heat stroke.  Speaking of heat, if this greenhouse effect keeps up we'll all be living underwater."
  • "By the way, it's official... I can't have children!"
  • "(Feline AIDS is) the #1 killer of domestic cats."
  • "Slather up the sunscreen... I had a mole looked at recently and the doctor told me that due to the extent of its irregular borders I'm flirting with a melanoma."

I have found lots of adoptees are drawn to the dark, sarcastic side of humour.  Perhaps "being separated after birth" has deeper cryptic meaning than I usually like to discuss!

YEP!

You and my oldest son:  Debbie and Donnie Downer!  I never thought about it before; thanks for the laugh.   His dark and
sarcastic side of humor is about PEOPLE in general...  His favorite statement is:  "I've found that I'm not too fond of little
kids... or older kids... or young adults... or even old people."  and then he just walks away.

"I can be changed by what happens to me, I refuse to be reduced by it." M.A.
