This week I heard the most horrendous story about a European adoption agency (I still have to find out which one it was) that as one of their many paid services, organizes roots travels, so adoptees can visit their country of origin and reunite with their natural family. Although I am already apalled by the idea that adoption agencies make money out of the need of intercountry adoptees to get in touch with their lost origin, this agency even went one step further, by guarenteeing reunion with the natural family.

One may wonder how reunion can be guaranteed.

Well this particular agency, when confronted with incooperative natural parents or when natural parents couldn't be traced back or happened to be dead, would hire stand-in mothers, who would show up at the reunion meeting, pretending to be the adoptee's natural mother and who were were trained to give only vague answers and tell further contact was impossible because of shame in the family.

Once again a perfect example of the continuation of secrets and lies in the adoption industry.
