While it's not even six months ago the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls was faced with charges of child abuse; while the investigations in Jersey into the abuses taking place at the children's home of Haut de la Garenne are still going on; while in Ireland it was only a few years ago the Christian Brothers had been facing similar charges, while those same Christian Brothers already had a track record of abuse charges in Canada and Australia; while abuse of children in care of others keeps going on, we could expect Oprah to take a firm stance in this and dedicate many of her shows to these dogs of society. Instead, the sudden loss of her cocker spaniel was more important, so instead Oprah decided to dedicate one of her shows to the other type of puppy-mills in existence.
Oprah dedicates puppy-mills show to her dog

updated 9:32 p.m. ET April 1, 2008CHICAGO - Oprah Winfrey plans to dedicate a show investigating abuses at puppy mills to her cocker spaniel, Sophie, who died last month from kidney failure.
“Sophie gave me 13 years of unconditional love. She was a true love in my life,” Winfrey says on the broadcast scheduled to air Friday. (Advance remarks from the show were released Tuesday by Harpo Productions.)
The show features special correspondent Lisa Ling investigating puppy mills, which Ling calls “horrific” and “haunting.”
Winfrey says the show is “for anybody anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog, or just cares about their basic right to humane treatment.”
While Sophie was not a product of a puppy mill, and Winfrey’s three current dogs were adopted from breeders, Winfrey says in the future she would look to adopt from an animal shelter.
“I would never, ever adopt another pet now without going to a shelter to do it. I am a changed woman after seeing this show,” she says.

I remember there was a time
I remember there was a time when the big O used to cover topics of real social significance. She did a piece YEARS ago on this woman who had multiple personalities, all that resulted from a life-time of abuse. Maybe those were the days she was still very much in touch with her wounded-side. Now she's doing Jerry Springer quality programs like the one mentioned in the preganant lesbian-turned-father story, here.
I guess when you have friends who adopt, you can't expose the corruptions that take place and hurt ordinary people. Oh well. Maybe we can find a new face to cover the moral issues of today. I would think safe child placement has more value than a story on good versus bad dog breeders and fertliity experiments.
(where's my freakin bottle????)
