The nerdy-nerd Nerd in Me

Kerry's picture

I have a confession.  I am a true-blue hard-core NERD.

...

I'm not your average nerd, who likes to read books and magazines.  No.  I'm the kind of nerd who wants to become one with the author and characters, created by mind pen and paper, and go where they (author and characters, alike) live and breathe.

Yes, I am a freak, especially since my favorite authors, like Austen and the Bronte sisters, are dead.

So what's left for a pathetic pup like me with four kids and no money?  my TV and PBS specials, of course!

The problems is, getting the quiet solitutde I need to watch these shows...

See, lots of people thing "readers" are Nerds, but for me, reading has become my hobby and interest.  I love to collect books.  Not just ANY books, but certain books that speak to me in a language that touches my heart, my soul, or my twisted mind and warped sense of humour.  My book collection is modest, but it's by far my most favorite reflection of who I am and what I think about.

Nerdiness

Oh I'm as much a nerd as you are, or maybe even worse, though I don't want to turn this into a competition over who is the über-nerd. Just like you I love reading and very much like collecting books. The latter compulsion has waned a little, because last couple of years I have moved a lot, in which case books are not the most pleasant asset to have. So instead I started collecting digital information. Since I am a software engineer by profession, I started collecting programming related papers, documentation and the like. I haven't counted the number of publications on my laptop, but is easily exceeds 5000. Last year, when starting to work on PPL, I found a new domain of interest for my nerdy needs. Since the realm of child-placement is vast, there is a lot for me to find and collect. At the moment I am collecting websites about adoption, the number of which is staggering. So far I've been able to find little over 1000 websites that have the word "adopt" in their name, of which at least 350 are related to adoption.con.

Just to give an example of my nerdiness

Closet-Case

I love talking about types of nerds, because it gets so interesting how and what inspires a person's interest.

With me, the books have always been about reading, and being "someplace else".  My favorite place in the world was at school, and at school, I loved going to either the library or the nurse's office.  The library had books, (my imagination's escape) and the nurse's office had the cot where I could sleep, if I needed to, and the nice lady with the jar filled with cotton balls (they looked like marshmallows!)  For some reason that all made sense to me, and brought me comfort.

Compulsive reading

As long as I remember I've been wanting to know everything. Even as a child I knew it would be an impossible achievement, but I've never given up on taking that road. I'm more than an avid reader, I'm a compulsive reader. As such I hardly have any boundaries to what I read, whether it is a newspaper, a book, a gossip magazine, webpage or a sign along the road. As long as there are letters, my eyes drift towards them. Still I am far removed from knowing everything. My head is full of stupid trivia, most of which not even related to something that actually interest me, yet there is so much I am still oblivious of.
