Brilliant work. And good timing, as this is the year where the EU will have to finalise its Strategy on Children's Rights.
And what does the European Parliament propose?
To get the EU pushing for adoptions. Hurray!!!
Someone should ask them what the below means in real language:
'Community instrument on adoption Reiterating every child's right to a family, MEPs suggest establishing a Community instrument to facilitate adoption. Finally, they urge the EU to adhere to the UN and Council of Europe conventions on the rights of the child. The report, draft by Roberta Angelilli (UEN, IT) is scheduled for a plenary vote at the January session, in Strasbourg.'
The proposed EU strategy on the rights of the child won the backing of the EP Civil Liberties Committee on 18 December, but also inspired many new proposals from MEPs, including tougher measures to combat paedophilia on the internet. The committee also advocated creating a single set of extraterritorial criminal laws to counter child sex tourism, and a system enabling the prosecution within Europe of suppliers of products manufactured with child labour.
The Civil Liberties Committee reiterated the European Parliament's opposition to all forms of violence against children, and called for a specific budget heading for their rights, with which to fund work required by the future strategy. Its own-initiative report was approved almost unanimously (just one abstention).
Combating paedophile pornography and violence on the internet
The committee's many proposals included devising technical measures to combat the dissemination of paedophile content via the internet. They would like to involve access suppliers, search engines and even banks, so as to block payment by would-be purchasers of illegal content.
MEPs also wish to protect children by tightening up rules on the transmission of harmful content via the internet or multimedia messaging services and the sale of violent video games. They would like a uniform classification and labelling system to be created for such games, and for all audiovisual content.
Finally, they would like children to be better informed of their rights, via a dedicated internet site to be set up for this purpose.
Enforce ban on child labour
MEPs advocate a mechanism to enable the prosecution, in Europe, of suppliers of products that have been manufactured with child labour. The European Commission is urged to check wheter production lines comply with rules prohibiting child labour.
European kidnap alert system and prosecution of sex criminals in Europe
The committee recommends establishing a European kidnap alert system, and a telephone help line for children. It also advocates devising a European strategy, and creating a single EU-wide set of extraterritorial criminal laws, to counter child sex tourism.
Community instrument on adoption
Reiterating every child's right to a family, MEPs suggest establishing a Community instrument to facilitate adoption. Finally, they urge the EU to adhere to the UN and Council of Europe conventions on the rights of the child.
The report, draft by Roberta Angelilli (UEN, IT) is scheduled for a plenary vote at the January session, in Strasbourg.

Don't the rights of each child include the right to have his/her natural family, and origins protected and kept free from harm AND from those who wish to hunt and gather for personal gains and profit?
Hasn't REAL history proven itself true that adoptees and foster children around the world have been taken in and abused by pedophiles and deviants of all kinds, creating all sorts of new problems governments and officials can't manage anymore?
Seems adding more international adoption to the EU agenda will only add to these not-so-"pint-sized" problems, not solve them!
The video is mariannas and mine , we have set up an EU site if anyone is interested. Mariana is from Illegal adoptions Greece. (its only a blog but its a start). adoptionpledge2unite.blogspot.com/
That's a great initiative Tina. I feel there is a huge momentum addressing international adoption and child trafficking. On the one hand more and more cases surface, while at the same time a strong lobby is trying to liberate the adoption market, having supporters in the form of MEP Caveda as Lulu already indicated. Great you decided to raise a voice against this.
As you probably know we have done some research into the adoption industry here on PPL, though I must admit my knowledge about Greece is fairly limited. I do recall you posting Think the Unthinkable about Ben Needham. Do you have pointers I can look into?
Hiya I'm getting some links together for you to look at. www.seasyp.gr is a good site for a bit of history with the Illegal adoptions. Mariana who Im doing the site with is the representative in Greece for the Needham family. I got to know her after she heard my story. Here in the UK our closed family courts system makes people too afraid to speak out about what is happening to them. Greece baby trade is controlled mainly by the Gypsies and drug barons. The Gypsies being the most feared. The superstition and fear of the Gypsies goes back for ever. Greece are only now half heartedly admiting that corruption 'may' exsist. Together we decided to try and bring some attention to what is happening and how it is happening.
It has made me realise just how EU the UK is NOT. Trafficking and illegal adoption is a world wide issue and somehow we need to work as one. PPL has probably done more than most to bring nations together. I am though just begining to realise what a mega bucks corrupt world we live in.
Congratulations on your new project, Tina! Your personal insight and talents will bring voice like no other, and that's exactly what's needed to help unify the global effort in helping all parents preserve the safety of their children.
Life HAS to be more about the here and now... it has to include a future that's worth living, too. Each child born is a reminder that life goes on, and those children deserve better, not the same - or worse - than what WE had! I believe we owe it to ourselves the chance to make things right in our lives, so happiness can be attained.
ANYTHING is possible, if we put our minds and combined efforts to it!
Best wishes with your Blog, and remember... "Baby steps" will get us where we need to be. ~k
