So far, none of our dogs lived past the age of ten (for some odd reason each Westie we ever had has had been diagnosed with cancer at that age and died soon after).
With that in mind, the cost of keeping a dog to a child IS comparing kibbles to boat-loads of expenses that exceeds orchards of apple and orange trees!!!
