The Consequences of Child Placement

"Attention Deficit".  It can mean many things to many people.  In my house, with four kids, it means not every child is getting the attention he/she may want from both parents all the time.  Such is the consequence of being out-numbered.  Hub-man and I do our best to attend to the needs of each child, but we are human.  We will fail, and we will be judged.  My hope is my kids will be kind when they look back on their childhood and remember all that was done for and with them, and not focus on what was not done.

I have very strong opinions when it comes to Parenting.  I believe a mother's place is home with her babies.  I believe a father's place is at work, ensuring Mom's place can indeed be home with her babies.  If this arrangement can't be made, because the woman's salary is bigger and better than the man's, then the father should be home with the children, and the mother should be working.  Either way, one parent's place is home with the children, the other's is at work, providing the income for all to survive and thrive, together.  I believe that's how families should work together, ideally.

Yes, life happens.  Parents need to prepare for that, for their children's sake.  Is it easy to raise a family?  Hell no.  No where is it written that it would be.  It takes team-work and sacrifice.  LOTS of sacrifice.  Perhaps that's the bargain most adults don't realize when they first think "baby blue or pink?"

Below is a sample of what is being sold these days to parents of all types about the attention each child needs in a family.

I find it tragic that pills are replacing sound, loving, attentive parenting.

Most Kids With ADHD Aren't Getting the Treatment They Need

When kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) aren't adequately treated, they may seem like a whirlwind of overwhelming energy or unable to concentrate long enough to complete tasks. And that can make them — and even their parents — feel pretty out of control. But treatment can help make life feel much more manageable for kids with the common behavioral disorder.

Analyzing medical information about more than 3,000 8- to 15-year-olds, researchers found that of those who met the accepted criteria for ADHD, less than half had actually been formally diagnosed and only 32% were regularly given medications to treat the condition in the past year. In other words, many of the estimated 2.4 million kids with ADHD who need help aren't getting it.

ADHD can affect how kids interact and function socially, academically, and at home. And children and teens with the condition also may have other problems (like depression, anxiety, or learning disorders) that require treatment, too. Plus, they may be at greater risk for smoking and drug use, especially if the ADHD isn't treated consistently — or at all. That's why catching the condition and treating it as soon as possible is so crucial.

More About ADHD

ADHD affects about 8% to 10% of school-age kids. Because ADHD is a broad category covering different things — attention, activity, and impulsivity — it can show up in different ways in different people (both children and adults).

Some kids with ADHD have trouble:

  • paying attention or staying focused on a task or activity
  • engaging in activities quietly
  • finishing assignments at school or home
  • focusing on instructions and following through
  • paying close attention to details or making careless mistakes
  • organizing tasks and activities
  • waiting their turn

Children with ADHD may also:

  • jump from one activity to another
  • lose or forget things (such as homework)
  • become easily distracted, even when doing something fun
  • interrupt or intrude on other people
  • blurt out answers before questions have been completed
  • fidget with their hands or feet or squirm around when sitting
  • feel restless
  • talk excessively

Of course, all kids (especially younger ones) act like this sometimes, especially when they’re tired, anxious, or excited. But the difference is that ADHD symptoms are present over a longer period of time and regularly happen in different settings.

What This Means to You

ADHD can't be cured, but it can be successfully managed. Scientists have found that certain drugs (which may include stimulants, nonstimulants, and sometimes antidepressants) can help control ADHD symptoms and allow kids and teens with ADHD to concentrate, focus, and function better in every aspect of their lives.

But medication is usually just one part of an ADHD treatment plan, which often includes behavioral therapy and making adjustments such as:

  • reorganizing the home and school environment
  • giving clear directions and commands
  • setting up a system of consistent rewards for appropriate behaviors and negative consequences for inappropriate ones

If you think your child might have ADHD, schedule an evaluation with your doctor, who can get to the bottom of the behaviors and rule out other medical conditions. If ADHD is diagnosed, the doctor will work closely with you to create a treatment plan tailored specifically to your child's symptoms, circumstances, and medical history.

Although it can often be challenging to raise kids with ADHD, it's important to remember that they aren't intentionally "acting out," or being "bad" or difficult. Getting kids the help they need early on and following all of the doctor’s recommendations can help them — and you — learn to control their behavior and lead much more manageable, happy lives.

Studies show that there is a familial transmission of the disorder which does not occur through adoptive relationships. Twin studies indicate that the disorder is highly heritable and that genetics contribute about three quarters of the total ADHD population. While the majority of ADHD is believed to be genetic in nature roughly 1/5 of all ADHD cases are thought to be acquired after conception due to brain injury caused by either toxins or physical trauma prenatally or postnatally. According to a majority of medical research in the United States, as well as other countries, ADHD is today generally regarded as a chronic disorder for which there are some effective treatments. Over 200 controlled studies have shown that stimulant medication is an effective way to treat ADHD. Methods of treatment usually involve some combination of medications, behaviour modifications, life style changes, and counseling. Certain social critics are highly skeptical that the diagnosis denotes a genuine impairment and question virtually all that is known about ADHD. The symptoms of ADHD are not as profoundly different from normal behavior as are those of other chronic mental disorders. Still, ADHD has been shown to often impair functioning, and many adverse life outcomes are associated with ADHD.

This piece of information from Wikipedia seems to indicate ADHD seems primarily to have a nature component, which of course raises the question whether our societies leave enough room for variety to allow all of us to find our own place. Is a school system based on cognitive training the best place for all children?

Placement of the mother, first

These "twin studies"... I'd be curious to learn how and where they were conducted, and who helped fund them.

For instance, twins have been separated at birth, and sold to adoptive parents and studied to see if there were any "real" differences in nature v. nurture.

Call me stupid, but, doesn't "attention deficit" imply there is a lack of attention being given to a particular person?

Chicken-egg, folks!  Which came first?  The poor attention, or the disorder?
