MDOC is appropriated funds each fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) by the Mississippi Legislature. The annual appropriation includes funds for salaries, travel, contractual services, commodities, and payments to county jails, regional facilities and private prisons for housing of state inmates. The Committee for Performance, Expenditure, Evaluation, and Review (PEER) annually calculates a cost per inmate day for the three state operated prisons. The composite average daily cost per inmate for FY 2005 was $36.42, which represents a $0.31 reduction in the daily cost per inmate from the FY 2004 cost of $ 36.73.
The mission of the social service system, including private non-profit providers, local government agencies, and state agencies is to: protect vulnerable children and adults from abuse, neglect or exploitation; support family preservation and community living; prevent family violence and disruption.
