This figures show the number of children in out-of-home care on September 30, the last day of the federal fiscal year, as reported by state child welfare agencies. Out-of-home care is defined as 24-hour substitute care outside of the child's home in pre-adoptive homes, relative foster homes, non-relative foster homes, group homes, institutions, and supervised independent living situations. Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) operates all state prisons, the Baltimore City Detention Center and Central Booking and Intake Facility, oversees probationers who are conditionally returned to the community by the court in lieu of incarceration, and supervises all parolees including mandatory supervisees.

Budget: According the fiscal digest for FY 2006 (published by the Department of Legislative Services in June), the legislative appropriation for DPSCS was $1,000,040,998.

Staff: Currently (FY 2006) the Department has approximately 11,740 authorized and contractual positions.

Facilities: 27 state prisons ranging from maximum security to pre-release, and 50 offices within the Division of Parole and Probation which include parole/probation and drinking driver monitor program field offices and administrative offices.

Populations under DPSCS jurisdiction: 26,748 in institutions and 66,118 (active cases) under the Division of Parole and Probation, as of June 30, 2005.
