I believe the clues to a person's damaged experience can be found in the area of Family Secrets.  Each Family has them... but not all Secrets are "bad".  Perhaps the ones that pit one against another are done intentionally to test Loyalty, I don't know... but it makes sense to me that people of a different nature are usually Isolated  in some term and context of family experience.
